EcoVia’s CARMON fluidized bed heat exchanger (CARMON FBX) technology manages biofouling, a long-standing industrial problem. This enables significant performance gains in existing applications and new approaches to other long-standing problems.
Biofouling — the accumulation of microorganisms, plants, algae or animals on wetted surfaces — can occur essentially anywhere water is present. Biofouling creates risks, challenges, and costs to technologies and industries. Its impact on heat transfer alone (through inefficiencies in heat transfer and maintenance requirements) directly costs the US economy roughly $50B/year with additional opportunity costs through preempting otherwise valuable heating opportunities.
CARMON FBX provides a low-cost, low-risk, low-maintenance path to preempt biofouling of heat exchangers. It leverages decades of global Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (MBBR) experience with continuously self-cleaning fluidized beds to eliminate heat exchanger biofouling. In short, CARMON FBX leverages the MBBR media’s operating characteristics to constantly scrub the heat exchanger’s surfaces and keep them clear of biofouling. Opening the ability to reliably, at low cost, transfer heat in high-biofouling risk environments opens the door to tremendous economic opportunities.
EcoVia has identified two high-priority, high-value CARMON FBX applications:
- Heating Wastewater Treatment: Biological processes in the coldest water conditions drives wastewater treatment facility sizing. Raising the minimum operating temperature by 3 degrees centigrade increases operational performance by over 20 percent – at a fraction of the cost of traditional approaches.
- Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration (HVACR): CARMON FBX lowers the cost to use bodies of water for HVACR applications. In addition to significant energy savings (30-50%), it enables use of natural refrigerants (such as sub-critical CO2).
